If you don’t have health insurance through a group health plan, you may be able to get free or low-cost coverage through Apple Health or the Washington Healthplanfinder. Insurance brokers or navigators are available across the state who can help you find, compare and select a health plan. More information about Apple Health eligibility is available here.
Medicare is federal health insurance for people aged 65 or older. You may also qualify if you have permanent kidney failure, Lou Gehrig’s disease, blindness, or receive disability benefits. Individuals can apply for Medicare three months before their 65th birthday. There can be risks to signing up later, such as a gap in health coverage or a financial penalty. You can apply online or in person at the local Social Security Administration office. Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) are also available to help you navigate Medicare and its various parts.
Washington State also has Medicare Savings Programs that can help eligible people with Medicare costs. You can apply online, by phone at 877-501-2233 or at the DSHS Community Services Office.
Additional assistance is available for individuals with specific health conditions. Some examples are available here or here.
The Breast and Cervical Health Program provides free cancer screening and diagnostic services to eligible people in Washington State. Eligibility is primarily based on health insurance status, income, and age.
Prescription assistance programs may be able to help with prescription medication costs. If you have unused, unwanted or expired medications in your home, you can dispose of them through Secure Medicine Return
There are two important opportunities for undocumented individuals, regardless of immigration status, to sign up for healthcare coverage in WA.
Starting July 1, 2024, the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) will offer limited enrollment into Apple Health (Medicaid) at no cost for undocumented adults.
During “open enrollment” or “special enrollment” periods, (Nov 1– Jan 15), undocumented individuals can buy low cost healthcare plans (Cascade Care and Cascade Savings plans) on the Washington Healthplan finder.
Learn more about these critical Health Care options in this FAQ which is also available in several languages. If you want more information, start here to connect with a navigator or broker in your community. |
