Watches

Every man liked to have a watch and the general store offered him a variety in its jewelry department. The watches in the case are pocket watches. Some are made of gold, others of sterling silver or nickel-plate. They hung on a chain or fob that was attached to a tab in a small pocket in a man's vest or on his pants.

Pocket watches had many uses. A brakeman on the logging trains in the Skagit Valley owned one of the watches in the case. Someone in the Elks Club used another. It has the initials BPOE and an elk head in bas relief.

Watches in the 1897 Sears Roebuck were listed for sale from $0.98 for a nickel-plated watch to $35.75 for a "full 17 jeweled, Special Railway" watch.
