Skagit County, Skagit Valley College partner on Phase I of Indoor Recreation and Event Center

SKAGIT COUNTY – Skagit County Parks and Recreation and Skagit Valley College (SVC) are partnering on a project to enhance recreational opportunities at Skagit Valley Playfields and the SVC campus.

The project will include remodeling of existing restroom and concession facilities at Skagit Valley Playfields and cover for the new SVC tennis courts that were relocated during the construction of McIntyre Hall.

The projects will be funded by a grant of $1,000,000 received by Skagit County in 2007 from Washington State Community, Trade and Economic Development as seed money for the proposed Skagit County Indoor Recreation facility planned to be built on 10 acres of county property adjacent to SVC.

“Due to the economic downturn, we may be a few years out from construction of our indoor recreation facility, but our legislative delegation is in concurrence that these funds can be used to improve and enhance existing facilities,” said Skagit County Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt. “By improving the restroom facilities, it provides benefits for trails, playfields, and the entire complex.”

In addition to state funding the Skagit County Softball Association is contributing $100,000 and an effort is underway in the tennis community to provide financial support.

“These projects fit nicely into our Indoor Recreation and Event Center plan, as well as our overall efforts to continue to enhance Skagit Valley Playfields and Skagit Valley College as a regional facility for athletics and cultural enhancement,” said Skagit County Parks and Recreation Director Bob Vaux. “During our community-based planning process for indoor recreation, the need for covered tennis courts was identified as a high priority.”

“We have a long and successful track record of working with Skagit County Parks and Recreation to provide quality facilities,” said Skagit Valley College Athletic Director Gary Knutzen. “Bigger things are yet to come, but these two projects will definitely be a move in the right direction as evidenced by the cooperative construction operation, and use of the Duvall Pavilion, Skagit Playfields and the Dream Field which affords all area people opportunities for use.”
