Comments Sought on UGA Open Space Concept Plan
SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County residents care deeply about open space and are concerned that growth is destroying much of the open space they love. Surveys of residents repeatedly confirm this value.
Open space comes in many forms. It is a "catch-all" term that can include recreation lands, wildlife habitat, trails, critical areas, farmlands and forested areas.
Comments are being sought on a proposed plan to identify and protect a specific type of open space: open space corridors within and between urban growth areas. "Urban greenbelt" is another term used for some of this type of open space. The plan describes options to fund and administer an open space program.

This plan meets the requirement of the state Growth Management Act to identify open space corridors within and between urban growth areas. This same requirement is part of the Skagit Countywide Planning Policies governing actions by cities and the county. The plan is simply a layering of all the existing parks, open space, and trails plans from the cities, the county, and other agencies, along with some additional areas that create more effective open spaces.
