Skagit County Hosts NACo Green Purchasing Intern
SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County
is one of 16 counties in the United States to host a summer intern through the
National Association of Counties (NACo) that will help advance the county's
efforts to purchase greener products.
Green purchasing refers to county efforts to source products that save money
and protect the environment. Green products can include those that are recycled,
biodegradable, less toxic, locally-sourced, and energy-efficient.
"Counties across the country are evaluating their purchasing strategies
to find opportunities to save taxpayer money, reduce negative impacts on the
environment, and find better performing products to provide vital services to
communities," said Cook County Commissioner Gregg Goslin, chair of the
NACo Green Government Advisory Board. "This intern program helps counties
get started by provided much-needed staff capacity."
The intern will work with county sustainability staff for 10 weeks to research
the county's buying and green product options, and develop training materials
for staff, and make recommendations on green purchasing policies.
Skagit County is pleased to welcome Kelsey Burns as its Green Purchasing Intern.
Kelsey is a junior at Western Washington University, where she is pursuing a
degree in Environmental Policy.
The Green Purchasing Intern Program was made possible by project partner, MobilizeGreen,
and NACo Green Government partners.
