2010 Skagit County Fair to feature sustainable practices
SKAGIT COUNTY The Skagit County 2010 Fair theme, Bringing it all back home, emphasizes the Fairs connection to Skagit Countys community, local farmers, and families.
In an effort to support a healthy future for the local community, organizers of the 2010 fair are incorporating sustainable practices into the Fairs events and activities. This years fair will feature bike racks, local vendors, hobbies and crafts competitions for Recycle, Sustainable crafts, and options for composting and recycling. Fair organizers hope to expand these initiatives at future fairs to further support a sustainable Skagit County.
Locally-Grown Food and Skagit-Made Products
The 2010 Fair is partnering with local farmers markets to include locally-grown food and locally-made products. To help encourage participation, this years Fair will offer special rates to farmers market vendors wishing to participate in the Fair.
Forms and Handbooks available at www.skagitfair.com
In an effort to reduce paper use, Fair organizers will offer forms and handbooks on the Skagit County Fair website. Skagit County will save an estimated 340,000 pages of paper by offering the Premium List and Exhibitors Handbook online rather than printing it.
Comprehensive Recycling and Composting
As a participant in Skagit Countys Zero-Waste Events Program (skagitcounty.net/zwe), this years Fair will offer recycling and composting waste stations throughout the fairgrounds. Fair organizers hope to dramatically reduce the amount of landfill waste by encouraging and providing the use of these two options.
Bike Racks
Bike racks will be offered at this years Fair entrance for localized transportation. Fair organizers hope to reduce congestion and vehicle emissions by encouraging walking, bicycling, and bussing to the Fair.
Help make the Skagit County Fair sustainable!
- Use the Skagit County Fair website to buy tickets and view documents online
- Bike, walk, or bus to the Fair and utilize the Fairs new bike racks available at entrances
- Compost and recycle! Look for new waste disposal stations in the food-vending areas. Read the signs carefully to correctly distinguish between compostable and recyclable products.
- Try other sustainable activities. Carpool to the Fair, bring reusable bottles for water, avoid picking up extra napkins and utensils, and support our local vendors.
