Skagit County receives 4th place in Digital Government 2010 Survey
SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County was recognized for receiving the 4th place award from the Center for Digital Government (Center) and the National Association of Counties yesterday. This award recognizes counties across the country that are providing exemplary digital services to their public.
The annual Digital Counties Survey focused its attention on finding counties that provide information and communication technology to support and provide public service. This year's survey focused on counties who achieved results through technology with the current economic situation.
Mike Almvig, Skagit County Director of Information Services, presented the award to the Board of County Commissioners and described the significant services highlighted in the survey response that Skagit County has achieved or is implementing to receive this award, including:
- The availability of County
Clerk court documents to the world wide web through a partnership with the
State of Washington's digital archives
- The Sheriff's Office's
transition to use of electronic citations in their patrol cars
- The transition from hand
receipts to an automated ticketing system at the Guemes Island Ferry (anticipated
to be implemented before the end of the year)
- Skagit County Public
Works and the GIS department are working together to develop a stormwater
asset map using Geographic Information Systems to comply with Skagit County's
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. This map will
be a valuable tool in stormwater & drainage management, maintenance management,
and Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination efforts.
- The adoption of Skagit
County's Climate Action Plan with incorporated cost-saving measures
- The use of Skagit 21 and streaming media capabilities provided by Skagit County's partnership with Granicus as a means of achieving greater transparency within Skagit County government
The Board of County Commissioners and County administrator, Tim Holloran, thanked the County Information Services staff for their dedication and continued achievement of high standards. "The people in Skagit County are very fortunate to have our staff that we have," said Commissioner Dahlstedt. "To be able to do all of the things we do with the resources we have is tremendous."
In 2010, only two counties in Washington State received this award. This is Skagit County's fourth time receiving it. In 2003, Skagit County placed 5th; in 2008, 5th; in 2009, 4th.
