Welcome to Skagit County
August 14th, 2012
Samish Bay reopened
to harvesting all species of shellfish
Samish Bay was closed to
harvesting varnish clams earlier in July when a sample tested above the regulatory
level for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) or red tide. Two samples of varnish
clams submitted in July show levels declining below closure levels. Varnish
clams can hold on to the toxin longer than other shellfish.
The toxin produced by the
"red tide" organism is not made safe through cooking. Information
regarding red tide can be found at Biotoxin
Web site (http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/sf/biotoxin.htm) or call 1-800-562-5632.
Samish Bay closures based
on high levels of fecal coliform in the Samish River can be found at www.skagitcounty.net/CSI.
Cypress and Sinclair Islands
are currently closed to all shellfish harvest in Skagit County. Harvesters should
look for and obey warning signs that have been posted at marinas and recreational
beaches.
