Skagit County holds ribbon-cutting ceremony for new Transfer & Recycling Station Project

SKAGIT COUNTY -On August 23, 2012, project stakeholders and elected officials participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new Skagit County Transfer and Recycling Station. "Skagit County and its multitude of partners have been working toward this day for more than 15 years," said Skagit County Public Works Director Henry Hash. The bid was awarded to start construction on January 11, 2011. Mr. Hash indicated that the project was completed well within the planned budget.

The facility should be open to the public shortly; with only minor fine-tuning and punch list items yet to be completed.
Skagit County Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt reported that solid waste rates have been stable and only adjusted one time in the past 12 years. He stated that "Rates should remain at current levels for the next 2-3 years, and the Skagit
County rates remain lower than many of our neighboring counties."

Skagit County Solid Waste Division Manager Kevin Renz stated that "The new modern solid waste facility will allow for increased tonnage from 35 tons per hour to 80 tons per hour, increased recycling of materials, improved traffic flow, improved customer and staff safety, and improved operation efficiency. In addition, it is estimated that over 350 jobs were created during the project, including the contractor, subcontractors, suppliers, vendors and fabricators."

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Skagit County Commissioner Dahlstedt thanked the members of the Solid Waste Governance Board, the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, the Skagit County Project Delivery Team, and the Solid Waste Staff that kept the Transfer Station running during the challenges of construction.

Boss Construction, Inc. is the general contractor on the project, URS Corporation is the design consultant, KPG Incorporated is the construction administration consultant, and SSI Compaction Systems is the compactor manufacturer.
