Health Department Cautions that Toxin-Producing Algae may be present in Cavanaugh, Heart, Campbell, and Erie Lakes on Fidalgo Island

SKAGIT COUNTY - Water from Heart Lake was sampled on September 5, 2012, and results confirmed that blue green algae toxins were present at levels of public health concern. Toxins produced by blue green algae can cause illness in animals and humans.

Water sample results are pending from Campbell Lake and Lake Erie. Visual evidence of algae blooms is present in all three lakes, although the presence of toxins has not yet been confirmed for Campbell and Erie.

Please take the following precautions for all three lakes until further notice:

  • Do not swim or water ski

  • Do not drink lake water

  • Keep pets and livestock away

  • Clean fish well and discard guts

  • Avoid areas of scum when boating
  • For questions, please call Polly Dubbel at 360-419-3404.
