Skagit County approved
for bond for up to $9.3 million for the construction of new transfer station
On October 25,
2010, the Washington State Department of Commerce approved Skagit County's request
for up to $9.3 million from the State's bond cap authority for the construction
of a new transfer station. The awarded bond allocation authority comes from
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 for Recovery Zone
Economic Development Bonds.
Skagit County originally
received $5.276 million of allocation from the ARRA, but after applying for
additional allocation, received up to $9.3 million. "The timing of our
application was crucial to securing more funding for the project and will save
the County an estimated $390,000 over the 20-year life of the bonds," said
Skagit County Solid Waste Division Manager Kevin Renz.
This project includes the
construction of a new, pre-engineered, 23,000 square foot metal building for
solid waste transfer operations. The project will include new maintenance and
staff facilities as well as a new scale plaza. The new facility will be constructed
on the site of the current transfer station, which will remain operational throughout
the construction period.
Concurrent with the bond
announcement, Skagit County opened bids for the Transfer Station project. All
eight bids received came in under construction cost estimates resulting in additional
savings for the citizens of Skagit County.
