Countywide Youth Leadership Group Logs 3,000 Hours of Volunteer Time

SKAGIT COUNTY - VOICE (Voicing Our Ideas Challenging Everyone) is a countywide youth leadership group supported in part by United General Hospital, Skagit County Human Services, and the Washington State Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery. The group was just recognized as an Exemplary Substance Abuse Prevention Program for logging more than 3,000 hours of youth volunteer time in their communities – from beach clean up to working with the retailers and city council in Sedro Woolley to reduce the amount of retail alcohol advertising by 30 percent (this is a research based strategy proven to reduce underage drinking in a community).

They received their award at the Washington State Prevention Summit in Yakima on October 30, 2009.

For further information, contact Lisa Mitchell, the facilitator of the group. She can be reached at 856-7388.

VOICE members received their award from Miss Washington and David Dickinson, Director of the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery.
