IMMERSE YOURSELF IN PUGET SOUND!
Become a WSU Beach Watcher!

Love beaches? Want to learn a ton? Then join WSU Beach Watchers in Skagit County. Beach Watchers are professionally-trained volunteers dedicated to protecting Puget Sound's fragile environment through education, research and personal example.

The 100-hour WSU Beach Watcher training is being offered in Skagit County based at the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Reserve, March 10 - May 1 on Mondays and Thursdays, 9AM - 3:30 PM. It includes expert presentations, field trips and hands-on practice in:

  • coastal processes,
  • marine organism identification,
  • marine birds,
  • public education,
  • scientific monitoring,
  • restoration practices,
    and so much more!

In return, Beach Watchers continue learning while volunteering at least 100 hours over two years as citizen scientists, educators and project planners. A few examples of WSU Beach Watchers projects are organizing an evening seminar series, doing interpretation at public parks and monitoring beaches for shellfish toxins, bird breeding and rogue creosote logs.

Class size is limited so apply now. The application deadline is Friday, February 22.

For an application or more information, contact Adria Banks, WSU Extension / Skagit County at (360) 428-4270, ext 223 or abanks@co.skagit.wa.us.
