WORKSHOP PLANNED FOR COUNTY’S $70 MILLION POTATO INDUSTRY

WSU/Skagit County Cooperative Extension sponsors 21st Annual Western Washington Potato Workshop, slated for February 28 at CottonTree Inn in Mount Vernon

SKAGIT COUNTY – A prestigious panel of potato experts will be on hand at the 21st annual Western Washington Potato Workshop, slated for Friday, February 28, 2003, at the CottonTree Inn from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Mount Vernon.

“Potatoes in Skagit County are now the leading agricultural commodity, adding about $70 million to the county’s economy,” said Dyvon Havens, WSU/Skagit County Extension Agent. “Keeping this sector of agriculture healthy is very important to the overall vitality of the entire farming industry.”

Workshop speakers from major research institutions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia will cover a myriad of topics of interest to commercial and seed potato growers.

A luncheon will be hosted by Elenbaas Company, Skagit Farmers Supply, UAP Northwest, Whatcom Farmers Coop and Wilbur Ellis. The Washington State Potato Foundation is sponsoring the out-of-area speakers for the workshop. At the conclusion of the workshop a special tribute will be made to retiring WSU vegetable extension specialist Bob Thornton.

The Washington State Seed Potato Commission invites all participants to a social hour at the Cranberry Tree Restaurant in Mount Vernon immediately following the workshop.

“We’re excited about the level of interest and participation in our Annual Western Washington Potato Workshop,” said Havens. “It’s one of the premier workshops in the region.”

The workshop is free. For information, Havens can be reached at 360-428-4270 or at dyvonh@co.skagit.wa.us The full workshop agenda can be viewed under “Upcoming Events” at the Extension web site: www.skagitcounty.net/wsu
