COMMUNITY WORKS TOGETHER TO HOUSE FOOD BANKS IN ALGER AND HAMILTON
SKAGIT COUNTY Alger Food Bank and Hamilton Baptist Church will both receive high-quality modular units to provide food, shelter and other services to low-income residents, under a partnership project jointly supported by Skagit County, United Way of Skagit County, Skagit County Community Action, and a local business, Northwest Mobile Home and RV Salvage.
This partnership was formed to respond the needs at both the Alger Food Bank and Hamilton Care Center, said Skagit County Commissioner Ted Anderson.
The Hamilton Care Center was opened at the Hamilton Baptist Church in the wake of catastrophic flooding on October 21, 2003. This Care Center has become a central location for flood relief efforts of faith-based groups, FEMA, Washington Emergency Management, Associated Provider Networks Flood Support Services, and other organizations that work with flooding.
We would like to thank the Skagit County Commissioners for securing a $40,000 commitment and a waiver for set-up and permit fees, said Skagit County Community Action Director Bill Shuler. We also appreciate Jerry Robinson of Northwest Mobile Home & RV Salvage, for offering to sell the units at a $60,000 discount by way of donation, as well as transporting the unites free of charge.
Shuler also lauded United Way of Skagit County and Community Action for each committing funds to the project.
This is a great example of what can be accomplished in our community when people of goodwill pool their talents and resources, said Anderson.
Tough approximately 75 percent of the funding has been secure, an additional $30,000-$40,000 is necessary to meet the project goals. The Hamilton Care Center is also seeking the donation of a commercial kitchen for its community meals program.
