SKAGIT COUNTY RECEIVES $382,240 IN COORDINATED PREVENTION GRANTS FROM DEPARTMENT
OF ECOLOGY
SKAGIT COUNTY - Two grants totaling $382,240, were awarded to the Skagit County Public Health Department and Skagit County Public Works. The funds, known as Coordinated Prevention Grants, assist city and county efforts for hazardous waste collection and disposal projects, solid waste management enforcement projects and recycling education.
"People benefit from these programs every day," said George Sidles, a solid waste manager with the Washington State Department of Ecology. "These grants area a state-local partnership that gets hazardous waste safely out of homes and saves people money."
The Skagit County Health Department will receive $110,000 for solid waste enforcement, the review and processing of permits, permitting and inspection for solid waste facilities, review of proposed land-applied bio-solids as fertilizer, and public outreach. " Solid waste is potentiality a million dollar problem and is a Public Health concern in our recently completed Community Health Survey. With our rapid population growth we owe it to ourselves and to our children to be mindful of how our refuse is handled and to protect our groundwater from contamination, This money will help maintain the high level of protection that our county expects and deserves," said Peter Browning, Director of Skagit County Health Department.
Skagit County Public Works will receive $272,641 which will go toward programs dealing with household hazardous waste and the operation of Skagit County's Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility. These dollars will also be used to fund a Recycling Education Specialist.
