SEPTIC SYSTEM INSPECTIONS REQUIRED AT TIME OF PROPERTY TRANSFERS
New Skagit County resolution takes effect April 3, 2006

SKAGIT COUNTY – Effective April 3, 2006, inspections of on site septic systems are required at the time of property transfer. On February 14, 2006, the Skagit County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution requiring the property owner to provide maintenance records, if available, in addition to a complete seller disclosure statement on the condition of the septic system.

The cost of a septic system inspection range from $100 to $300 according to Steve Olsen with the Skagit County Health Department. All inspections must be made by a Skagit County certified operations and maintenance specialist.

The Skagit County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to require septic system inspections of homes at the time of sale. In a related action, they also adopted the Washington State Department of Health’s recommended standards and guidance for onsite sewage system proprietary treatment products.

“This action backs up our commitment for clean water in Skagit County,” said Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt. “Last December, we initiated a Clean Water Shellfish Protection Program. We want to make sure we are protecting our marine resources, shellfish and recreational opportunities in the rivers, bays, and estuaries of Skagit County.”
