SKAGIT COUNTY'S BEST SELF PROGRAM WINS ACTS OF CARING AWARD FROM NATIONAL
ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES
SKAGIT COUNTY Skagit
Countys Best SELF program, a summer education and learning program, was
selected as the winner of the Acts of Caring Award from the National Association
of Counties at their annual meeting in Washington DC earlier this month. An
"act of caring" is a community service provided by a county-sponsored
volunteer program that enhances or preserves the quality of life.
Congratulations to Tawni Helms and her staff who have invested many years
in creating a safe, constructive and educational programs for the youth of Skagit
County, said Skagit County Parks and Recreation Director Bob Vaux.
The Skagit County Best SELF program is a collaborative effort in partnership with seven local school districts and other organizations committed to youth. It is designed to keep children in grades kindergarten through six involved in an active and fun learning environment during the summer months.
Skagit County has been a pioneer in innovative programs like Best SELF. For 13 years, Tawni Helm and her staff have been making a significant difference in the life of young children, said Skagit County Commissioner Ted Anderson.
Winners were chosen from a careful review by judges fro the Points of Light Foundation, the American Red Cross, Americas Promise-the Alliance for Youth, the Child Welfare League of America, and the national Association of Volunteer Programs in Local Government.
