WSDOT REMINDS MOTORISTS OF STUDDED TIRE DEADLINE
OLYMPIA - The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reminds
motorists that the last day to legally use studded tires this season is Wednesday,
March 31. That leaves two weeks for motorists to remove the studs, as required
by law.
Studded tires are only legal from Nov. 1- Mar. 31 because of the damage they
cause to highways and safety considerations. Studded tires wear road surfaces
at a higher rate than other tires, causing an estimated $10 million in damages
each year to state highways. Additionally, research indicates vehicles with
studded tires take longer to stop than cars with other tires in mot winter driving
conditions.
WSDOT wants motorists to be aware that a wide variety of stud alternative tires
are available. "Many other winter tire options exist," said Chris
Christopher, State Maintenance Engineer. "We encourage motorists to do
some research on alternative tires. There's a wealth of information available
on tires that are superior to studs and don't cause damage to roads."
Motorists can continue to use other approved traction tires. The alternative
tires are defined as having at least an eighth of an inch of tread and are labeled
"Mud and Snow," "M+S," "M/S," or "All Season".
They can be used year-round, and almost all tires on the market meet these specifications.
Drivers concerned about crossing the mountain passes should consider carrying
chains.
Motorists cited for using studded tires after the Mar. 31 deadline will receive
an $86 fine.
