SKAGIT COUNTY WOMEN ELECTED OFFICIALS MEET GOVERNOR TO KICK OFF COMMEMORATION
OF CENTENNIAL OF WASHINGTON WOMEN WINNING THE VOTE
SKAGIT COUNTY All five women elected Skagit County Government officials recently attended a reception hosted by Governor Christine O. Gregoire and the Board of Advisors for the Womens History Consortium to raise funds for the Commemoration in 2010 of the Centennial of Washington Women Winning the vote in 1910.
Attending were Auditor Jeanne Youngquist, Clerk Nancy Scott, Commissioner Sharon Dillon, Superior Court Judge Susan Cook, and Treasurer Katie Jungquist. The reception, Sowing Good Seeds, was held at the Governors Mansion in Olympia, on March 15, 2007.
Washington was the first state in the 20th century and the fifth state in the Union to permanently enact womens suffrage after Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and Idaho in the 19th century. Washington womens success in 1910 helped to inspire the campaign that culminated in the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, when women won the right to vote nationally.
