MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL LATINA GIRLS GROUP GOES TO WORK ON CRIME VICTIMS' AWARENESS PROJECT

SKAGIT COUNTY - The Mount Vernon High School Latina Girls Group, sponsored by Skagit County Youth and Family Services, was awarded $4,495 for the 2006 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week Community Awareness Project. They were selected out of more than 160 applicants. Teresa Reynoza and Amy Petree of Skagit County Youth and Family Services are the creators and facilitators of the girls group.

The project will feature a series of activities throughout Skagit County to be held during the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the week of April 23-29, 2006. The funds will be used to support the activities, which include—two articles (English & Spanish) featuring the project in local print media, one panel presentation on a public affairs KSVR program, production of four Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) for broadcast on MVTV26, placement of nationally developed crime victims PSA’s (in English & Spanish) on the local radio and television station, and they will also be designing victim awareness posters in both English and Spanish and distributing them in the local schools and throughout Skagit County. They will also be requesting to secure a Skagit County Commissioners resolution. The group plans to continue supporting victim community awareness in Skagit County beyond the week of April 23-29, 2006.

The purpose of the Mount Vernon High School Latina Girls Group is to be a good, strong example to the teens in Skagit County. Their message to all teens is to keep working hard for what they want in their future and to keep studying in school because everything is possible if you continue to think positive.
