TOM SHEAHAN HONORED FOR 38 YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE
DEM Director to retire April 1

SKAGIT COUNTY - It was standing room only with more than 150 friends, co-workers and family members in attendance on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, when the Skagit County Commissioners recognized Tom Sheahan for 38 years of service to Skagit County.

Sheahan received recognition from the American Red Cross, Tesoro Refinery, CARE, the Town of Hamilton and others in a one hour ceremony topped off by a Power Point presentation highlighting his career. Compiled by his daughter, Jennie Sheahan, the presentation covered floods, fires, refineries, Search and Rescue, Red Cross, and of course, family. Sheahan received several plaques recognizing his years of service and accomplishment and even a wooden carved watch from Hamilton Mayor Tim Bates.

Sheahan’s daughters Jennie Sheahan and Amy Esary, both Skagit County employees, spoke of their dad’s dedication to his job. “I want to thank my dad for setting an example. His work ethic is absolutely incredible,” said Jennie.

Amy spoke of the many volunteer hours her father dedicated to his job to organize the Department of Emergency Management. “He instilled in us how important it is to volunteer.”

Sheahan recognized his co-workers at D.E.M. applauding Mark Watkinson’s great competence and diligence. “If I wanted another brother, I have five, Mark would be the brother.”

He also recognized the hard work of Fire Marshall Dan Cain and called Kelly Blane the best fire investigator in the State of Washington. He gave special recognition to past and present office staffers Sharon Bumgarner, Karla Strand and Krista Salinas.

County Commissioner Don Munks read a proclamation honoring Sheahan and thanked him personally for his friendship. “I live between two refineries. I can’t say what it means to have a friend like you. It’s a sad day to lose you, not as a friend but in the department you serve.”
