SECOND MEETING SCHEDULED FOR NATURAL HAZARD MITIGATION PLANNING

Wednesday April 9, 7 p.m. at Burlington City Council Chambers

SKAGIT COUNTY – A series of five public meetings is planned to seek input to develop an All Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan for jurisdictions in Skagit County including cities, towns, Skagit County, and other agencies and special purpose districts. The second meeting is scheduled for Wednesday April 9 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Burlington City Council chambers at 900 East Fairhaven. The event is sponsored by the Multi-Jurisdictional All Natural Hazard Planning Committee.

In order to remain qualified to apply for Hazard Mitigation Grant Funds following any declared disaster in Skagit County after November 1, 2003, each jurisdiction is required to have Mitigation Plan in place. This is a new requirement under the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.

Five meetings have been scheduled to provide a community forum for the discussion of alternatives, goals, and objectives, as well as practical advice and diverse points of view,” said Mark Watkinson with Skagit County Department of Emergency Management.

While general comments on natural hazards, including flood, fire, land movement, earthquake, severe storms and volcanic eruptions and related problems are welcome at all meetings, specific topics will be addressed at the following dates:

1. April 9, 2003 - Assess the Problem

2. May 14, 2003 - Set Goals

3. June 11, 2003- Review Possible Action

4. July 9, 2003 - Draft an Action Plan

“Topics for discussion cover a broad range of projects, such as dike setbacks to widening the Skagit River, public education abut emergency planning, to routine maintenance of our drainage infrastructure,” said Watkinson.
