April 6, 2021 Skagit County Commissioners recognize April 18-24, 2021 as National Healthcare Volunteer WeekToday, the Skagit County Board of Commissioners signed a proclamation declaring April 18-24, 2021 National Healthcare Volunteer Week in Skagit County. Today’s presentation specifically focused on the role that volunteers play in providing high quality, compassionate hospice services. In a session with Community Action of Skagit County on April 20, the Commissioners are expected to proclaim April 2021 “Skagit Volunteer Month,” honoring volunteers in the community broadly, including the volunteers who have helped Skagit throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “During a person’s end of life, hospice volunteers bring patients, family and friends deeply needed care and support,” said Commissioner Lisa Janicki, who currently serves as Chair of the Board of Commissioners. “Volunteers also do important outreach and educational work to help people plan for their final days and weeks, ensuring they are as comfortable as possible. We’re so thankful for the volunteers in the community that do this hard, hard work.” National Healthcare Volunteer Week was established in 1974 to celebrate the efforts of volunteers across the country. Volunteers in healthcare do a wide variety of work, including transportation, food pantries, lending closets, gift shops and serving on boards and committees. Hospice of the Northwest relies on volunteers to help serve patients and their loved ones during end-of-life care. “Our volunteers are invaluable to the organization,” said Erin Long, Volunteer Manager for Hospice of the Northwest. “Volunteers provide administrative support and provide patients help with household tasks, pet care, emotional support and other important end of life care.” Those interested in volunteering with Hospice of the Northwest can find information and required forms here.
