AREA KIDS USE FLOWERS
TO HELP "FEED BABIES"
Students in Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade at Madison Elementary School
are teaming up with Skagit County Community Action's Women, Infant, and Children
Nutrition program (WIC) to help ensure that young babies and their moms are
healthy. The 90 K-2 students are participating in a service-learning project
that involves the children growing flowers in their classroom, decorating flowerpots,
and selling the potted plants to raise funds that will be donated to Community
Action's WIC program.
The young students learned about the various ways Community Action helps out
in the community and voted on the program that they felt was the most important.
Funds for the WIC program will be raised through the sale of the children's
artwork and flowers. The public is encouraged to visit the presale at the Cinco
de Mayo celebration from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 6 at Madison Elementary
School. The sale continues from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. Featured
items will include, hand-painted terra cotta pots filled with flowers planted
by the students, stepping stones, clay pockets and ornamental plant markers,
all of which will be made by the children. For more information about this event
