SKAGIT COUNTY MOVES FORWARD ON INDOOR RECREATION CENTER PLAN

Commissioners direct Parks and Recreation department to write financial plan and request site design and architectural work for indoor rec center

SKAGIT COUNTY – The Skagit County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously yesterday to direct the Parks and Recreation Department to write a financial plan and publish a request for proposals for site design and architectural work for an indoor recreation center. Skagit County purchased 10 acres adjacent to Skagit Valley College as a location for the facility last summer.

The Board action followed an update presentation by the Citizens for Indoor Recreation and Event Center on the status of Skagit County’s planning process. After a series of public meetings facilitated by A.R.C. Architecture, Parks and Recreation Director Bob Vaux discussed possible scenarios for the facility that would include court space, possibly an aquatics center, meeting rooms, and facilities for various recreational activities.

“I am extremely grateful for all of the community members who volunteered in this planning process and for the County Commissioners for continuing their vision to improve the level of service offered by the Skagit County Parks and Recreation Department,” said Vaux.

Speakers supporting the project included Skagit Valley College President Gary Tollefson, Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation Director Larry Otos, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Wendy Poulten, Mount Vernon Chamber CEO Kristen Whitener, Concrete Mayor Jack Billman, and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Chair Colleen Fisher.
