April 22nd, 2003

Two major changes will be implemented on the SCAN long distance network

  1. The length of SCAN authorization numbers will change from the current 6-digits to 7-digits, AND;
  2. The current sequence of dialing the authorization number before the telephone number will move to dialing the authorization number AFTER the telephone number.

To access the SCAN network: Dial: 81 - AREA CODE - PHONE NUMBER YOU ARE CALLING - YOUR ACCESS CODE (adding the number "3" in front of your original 6 digit code as stated below)

EXAMPLE: 81-206-555-1212-3123456

Why is this change being implemented? Security control is an ongoing endeavor in the telecommunications industry. To keep your telecommunications equipment secure (PBX's, voice mail, etc.) your organization is likely implementing various controls today, in addition to constantly examining new security technology on an ongoing basis. Changing the SCAN dial sequence and lengthening the authorization number will help to slow the progress of unscrupulous hacking or fraud attempts.

Does this mean that immediately on August 1, 2003 everyone must dial a completely new authorization number? Not at all! A method was devised to simplify this transition for individual SCAN users. Immediately after July 31 everyone's authorization number will have the digit "3" added to the beginning. Therefore, if your authorization number is "123456" before August 1st, it will be "3123456" beginning August 1st.

Does this change affect telephone functions or related equipment that is used with SCAN? The SCAN service provider does not encourage storing or programming authorization numbers in any device. However, if you have pre-programmed or stored an authorization number for personal speed dial features in a phone, in your electronic key system, in a predictive dialer, an auto dialer, on a fax, or in a dial-up modem, etc., you will need to re-program the affected equipment and functions to work with the new SCAN dialing changes.
