Students to conduct mock trial in Skagit County District Court
SKAGIT COUNTY - Every year, Skagit County District Court and the Skagit County Prosecuting Attorneys office select a group of students to conduct a mock jury trial. These trials are scripted legal claims arising out of well known folk stories. This year, LaVenture Middle School students will try the case of State vs. Casey Clevenger. The charges are Vandalism and Computer Crimes. Students will fill all the roles typically involved in a trial including Judge, Prosecuting and Defense attorneys, Jury and Court personnel.
District Court Judges David Svaren and Warren Gilbert invite all interested parties to come to Superior Courtroom No. 2 on May 1 to enjoy the presentation. The Trial begins at 8:30.
Judges Svaren and Gilbert wish to recognize and thank Defense Attorney Corbin Volluz and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Sullivan for their efforts in preparing the students for trial. LaVenture School teacher Greg Doud helped organize the students and give them an appreciation for the importance of the Rule of Law in our society. Additionally, District Court Clerks Marcella Sheridan and Deblynne Whittlesey have been coordinating the Law Day trials for the past 11 years. Without their dedication and hard work this program would not be possible.
