HIGHWAY 20 CLOSURE RESCHEDULED

BURLINGTON – Tonight’s full closure of Highway 20 east of Burlington to install rumble strips is cancelled due to equipment problems. The rumble strip work is rescheduled for next Thursday night.

The Washington State Department of Transportation will close Highway 20 Thursday, May 20 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Pulver Road and Avon Allen Road, where they will grind grooves into the pavement. A detour will reroute motorists up to Peterson Road and then back to Highway 20.

Highway 20 is designated as a high accident corridor. The rumble strips will grab motorist’s attention and help prevent them from crossing over into oncoming traffic. This will help reduce the number and severity of accidents that occur along this highway.

The rumble strips are an interim safety improvement until the Washington State Department of Transportation builds a permanent safety project in 2007. The permanent project will widen five miles of Highway 20 to four lanes, between Interstate 5 and Fredonia Road and install a concrete barrier between Fredonia Road and Pulver Road to separate opposing lanes of traffic.
