Weekend events to affect traffic detours through Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON - Weekend drivers may experience extra delays while traveling through Mount Vernon and Burlington near the site of the Interstate 5 Skagit River Bridge collapse.
Several community events will bring racing fans, runners and more than 3,000 bicyclists to the area this weekend.

To keep traffic moving on Saturday during a large bicycle event, WSDOT is revising the southbound I-5 alternate route. Drivers taking exit 230 onto westbound State Route 20 in Burlington will see signs directing them to use Best Road to travel to southbound I-5 via SR 534. Extra law enforcement will be monitoring the area and WSDOT signals engineers will monitor several signals and manually adjust timing if necessary.

"We hope people will come to participate and enjoy these events," said Jay Drye, WSDOT assistant regional administrator. "We're putting in the extra effort to keep traffic running smoothly and we're asking for everybody to pack their patience and drive safely to help us make that happen."

The bicycle event, which starts in British Columbia, Canada and ends Sunday in Renton, will wind its way through Whatcom County and into Skagit County Saturday. From roughly 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. drivers can expect to see bicyclists on city, county and state roadways.

Near the bridge detour, bicyclists will take Cook Road across SR 11, to Avon Allen and across SR 20, and SR 536 to McClean Road, before taking SR 536 over the Skagit River to the Skagit County Fairgrounds.
