SR 20 REDUCED TO ONE LANE NEXT WEEK IN SKAGIT COUNTY
ANACORTES - Washington State Department of Transportation and it's contractor Rinker Materials will close one lane of westbound State Route (SR 20) for four days next week to repave the highway west of the Swinomish Slough Bridges near Anacortes.
Closure
- Monday, June 27 through Thursday, June 30 - crews will close one westbound lane of SR 20 around the clock from 7 a.m.
- Monday to 3 p.m. Thursday, between the Swinomish Slough Bridge and Sharpes Corner.
- One lane will remain
open to westbound drivers at all times.
While we don't expect long delays, drivers should plan ahead, leave early and be prepared for delays. - Crews will be off the road by 3 p.m. Thursday and all lanes of SR 20, between Burlington and Anacortes will be open for the holiday weekend.
Crews will close westbound SR 20 lanes next week to make up for work that was delayed because of rain the last two weeks. During the closure, crews will grind off a layer of old asphalt and then lay down a new layer of asphalt to smooth the highway. Under 24-hour closures, crews can pave the highway twice as fast.
The closure is weather dependent. If weather forecasts are dismal, crews will postpone the closure until the following week. Crews cannot pave in the rain. Therefore, rainy weather could delay paving operations and extend the closure past its scheduled opening time.
State Route 20 is the only road on or off Whidbey Island and is the main road into Anacortes. Drivers should plan ahead and expect delays if traveling on SR 20 to get to or from Whidbey Island and the Anacortes Ferry Terminal.
The pavement on SR 20 has exceeded it's lifespan and needs to be re-paved to create a safe driving surface for the 30,000 cars that use the highway each day.
