Public invited to tour new Community Justice Center on July 11, 15

It’s nearly four times larger, with 282 cameras and room to sleep 400. Before the Skagit County Community Justice Center formally begins operations, the public is invited to tour the facility and see the latest in state-of-the-art correctional technology.

A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, at the new facility – 201 Suzanne Lane, in Mount Vernon. Following the ceremony, from 3 to 6:30 p.m., Skagit County Corrections staff will offer guided tours of the new facility.

Those who can’t make the event midweek are invited to take a tour Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to noon.

“We’ve been looking forward to a new Community Justice Center for years,” said Skagit County Corrections Chief Charlie Wend. “This new space allows us to expand our medical services, offer new job-skills training programs, and increase the number of behavioral health offerings available to inmates.”

Crews are still putting the finishing touches on the facility – installing furniture and appliances, and testing all the electronic systems. Once Corrections staff complete training on the new systems, the facility will begin operation in late summer.
