REGIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING COMPLETED

SKAGIT COUNTY - On Thursday, July 27th, 2006, a consortium of local and regional agencies, led by the Domestic Violence Unit of the Office of the Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney, successfully sponsored “Domestic Violence Investigation and Intervention Training”, a one day seminar featuring nationally renowned Domestic Violence trainer Lt. Mark Wynn, (ret). The training was presented in partnership with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, Skagit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services, the Sedro Woolley Police Department, the Samish Indian Nation, and the Mount Vernon Police Department.

The seminar focused on Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking, and the appropriate response to such events by law enforcement, prosecution, and advocacy groups. The presentation focused on the importance of early intervention in domestic violence as an established strategy for preventing more violent events at later points in time, especially domestic violence related homicides. It also emphasized the need for law enforcement to attend to officer safety issues when responding to all domestic violence events.

Approximately 180 people attended the event, which was hosted by the Samish Nation at the Fidalgo Bay Resort in Anacortes. Representatives from the sponsoring agencies, as well as a broad cross section people from other related agencies in the region attended and participated.

The event was a product and part of a Domestic Violence training grant secured by the Domestic Violence Unit of the Office of the Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney in 2005. The grant was specifically aimed at providing training to improve victim safety and offender accountability in the realm of domestic violence.

“We were very pleased to see the overwhelming community response to this training,” said Tom Seguine. “We believe it is a strong indication of this community’s commitment to address domestic violence issues effectively over time.”
