New Solid Waste Rates in Effect Starting September 1st

On September 12, 2023, the Skagit County Commissioners approved a contract with a new vendor, Waste Management, to provide long haul transport and disposal of all solid waste collected at the Skagit County Transfer Station. Both bids submitted for the contract had a 40% increase in transport and disposal costs over the previous contract. As a result of the cost increase, Skagit County Public Works conducted a solid waste rate study to ensure rates were sufficient to stay solvent.

The Solid Waste division is funded entirely by disposal and user fees and is not supported by taxes or the general fund. The proposed rate increases were approved by the Solid Waste Advisory Committee and the Solid Waste System Governance Board before final approval by the Skagit County Commissioners on June 10, 2024.
The new solid waste rates will be effective starting September 1, 2024.

  • General solid waste at Skagit County Transfer and Recycling Station and the Sauk Transfer Station will now be $137 per ton.
  • The minimum charge for general solid waste will be $27 for the first 360 pounds.
  • At the Clear Lake Compactor Site, a 32 gallon can of garbage will now be $9.
  • Appliances will be $13 per item, and those containing freon will be $33.

Recycling and household hazardous waste drop-off will remain free for households.
