High fire danger remains in SKAGIT County

Skagit County – Firefighters all over Skagit County have been busy over the last week responding to over thirty calls for outdoor fires. Some common causes of the fires have been debris burning, escaped campfires, and improper disposal of cigarettes.

The Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind all residents that a ban on open burning is still in effect for Skagit County. This means no debris or land clearing burns are allowed.

At least two recent fires have been started from improper disposal of cigarettes. All cigarettes should be crushed completely out and the butts placed in a non-combustible receptacle. When driving in your vehicle you must use your ashtray. Washington State Law changed this year to make it illegal to discard tobacco products capable of starting a fire from a vehicle. Fines for tossing a cigarette out the window can reach $950.00.

Remember if you are responsible for starting a fire you may also be held responsible for the cost of putting it out.
