3 DAY SPECIAL FILING PERIOD FOR FREEHOLDERS

Prospective candidates for freeholders should be checking their calendars. Freeholders are elected for the purpose of framing a charter for Skagit County. Freeholder candidates will appear on the General Election Ballot, the election to be held on November 4, 2003.

Filing for candidacy will be held on September 24, 25, 26 between the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Freeholder candidates should file in the Office of the County Auditor, 2nd floor of the County Administration Building, 2nd & Kincaid, Mount Vernon. All candidates must be registered voters of the commissioner district in which they are seeking office AND a resident of Skagit County for at least five years prior to the General Election. There is not a filing fee for the office of freeholder. Freeholders can file for only one of the positions in their commissioner district. Freeholder positions are non-partisan. Please call the elections department for information on commissioner districts. Freeholders must file with the Public Disclosure Commission. The freeholder receiving a plurality of the votes cast for each position will be considered elected.

Candidates for Freeholder in Skagit County who will be out of the area during the filing period should contact the Elections Department of the Skagit County Auditor's Office for absentee filing instructions.
