September 23, 2003 SKAGIT VALLEY SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION DONATES $75,000 FOR CUSTER FIELD Skagit County matches contribution with Real Estate Excise Tax Funds to qualify for $150,000 grant SKAGIT COUNTY Skagit Valley Softball Association Advisory Board members presented the Skagit County Commissioners a check in the amount of $75,000 for the Charlie Custer Softball Field renovation project at Skagit Playfields. Skagit County will match that amount with an additional $75,000 with Real Estate Excise Tax (REET) funds. The combined $150,000 qualified Skagit County Parks and Recreation for a matching $150,000 from the Washington State Inter-Agency Committee for Outdoor Recreation. The grant request was approved by the state noting the great cooperation and support of the community and the worthiness of the project, said Skagit County Recreation Manager Dennis Lind. On hand to present the check from the Skagit Valley Softball Association were Pete Vandermeulen, Billie Hanna, Renee Roozenkratz, Dottie Moe, Rich Royston, Dave Lolley. Parks and Director Bob Vaux, Project Manager Patrik Dylan, and Lind attended the presentation. Its great the way our community and parks and recreation department works together to do great things, said Skagit County Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt. Its critical that we have this kind of community participation and partnership when were working with grant dollars. The combined funding of $300,000 will allow for a complete renovation of Charlie Custer Field, which is in need of improved drainage and has size restrictions. The field will be expanded to softball size, with state of the art drainage, irrigation, new fencing, backstop and dugouts as well as field lights. Lighting will allow for 150 more softball games to be scheduled per season, said Lind. The project has already begun and will be completed by mid-summer next year.
