WIC program will remain open in event of government shutdown

SKAGIT COUNTY – Skagit County Public Health & Community Services Director Jennifer Johnson reports that the Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will remain open in the event of a federal government shutdown.

If Congress fails to pass a budget and there is a federal government shutdown on Thursday, October 1, 2015:

• Local WIC clinics will continue to provide WIC services.
• Clients can use their WIC checks at approved stores.
• The State WIC office will operate as usual.

“We have enough funding to continue operations for most of October,” reports Washington State WIC Nutrition Coordinator Cathy Franklin. “We don’t anticipate the need to suspend local agency contracts or change the way we do business.”

WIC is a nutrition program for pregnant women, new and breastfeeding moms, and children under five. It provides monthly checks for healthy food, health screenings and referrals, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support. WIC services are available through six clinic sites across Skagit County.
