WORM WOMAN
IS COMING TO TOWN
Composters, gardeners,
farmers, and vermiculturists: Mark your calendars for October 16,
2002. Worm Woman is coming to town.
Skagit County Public Works Department is pleased to announce a free,
public lecture by Mary Appelhof, internationally known author of "Worms
Eat My Garbage." It will be held at the Lincoln Theatre in downtown
Mount Vernon (712 South 1st Street) on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00
P.M. Preceding the lecture from 6:00-6:45 there will a showing of
videos related to worm composting.
Mary Appelhof will be speaking on "Worm Bins to Compost Tea"
using a power point presentation that she has developed. She will
be speaking on the role worms and soil organisms play in fixing nitrogen
in the soil thereby making it available to plants rather than leaching
to ground water. She will also discuss compost teas and plant growth,
and worm bin composting as a source of compost for the teas.
Ms. Appelhof resides in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and travels the world
teaching people to compost food waste using red wriggler (Eisenia
fetida) worms. With masters' degrees in both biology and education,
the former high school science teacher now spends her time researching
vermicompost, writing and publishing books and videos on this fascinating
subject. She also organizes conferences which bring together scientists
and laypersons to discuss research needs and technologies to develop
the science and applications for vermiculture and vermicomposting.
Questions about this program can be directed to Frances Ambrose, Waste
Reduction/Recycling Educator at Skagit County Public Works 360-336-9400.
