Skagit County Commissioners proclaim October 16-23, 2008 Flood Awareness Week

“FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK”
October 16 – October 23, 2008

WHEREAS, the threat of serious flooding is a seasonal event in the Skagit Valley, occurring between approximately October 1 and March 15 of each year; and,

WHEREAS, flooding has been of prime concern to the citizens of Skagit County since the late 1800s and measures have been taken to minimize the damage of flooding since that time; and,

WHEREAS, there is a tendency to become complacent through the summer months, and for the concern to wane to a point that the attention necessary for the protection of the County is reduced to a dangerous level; and,

WHEREAS, each year at this time, as we approach the upcoming flood season, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Skagit County Public Works Department hold their annual flood exercise to assess the state of flood preparedness that exists; and,

WHEREAS, the Board of Skagit County Commissioners feel that in conjunction with the annual flood exercise, it is prudent and timely for the general public to be made aware of the threat of the coming flood season, and that the threat of flooding be given the attention necessary that the general public may be protected in the event of a major flood.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Skagit County Commissioners hereby declares that the week beginning October 16 – October 23, 2008, be known as “FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK”.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an intense effort by Skagit County be undertaken to bring the general public to an awareness of the coming flood threat.
