COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APPROVE $750,000 TO EXTEND FIBER OPTIC NETWORK TO BURLINGTON, PORT OF SKAGIT COUNTY AND UNITED GENERAL HOSPITAL

SKAGIT COUNTY - The Skagit County Commissioners voted unanimously to sign a resolution approving $750,000 of funding for the extension of the fiber optic network in Mount Vernon to Burlington, the Port of Skagit County and to United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley.

Funding for the project comes from the .08% rebate on sales tax from Washington State for public facility financing that creates employment opportunities. In 2000, the Board of the Skagit County Commissioners adopted Resolution 17837, issuing bonds of $8,000,000 to finance public facility projects within Skagit County with the principal and interest being paid from sales tax collected. A Public Facilities Committee meets regularly and makes recommendations to the Commissioners.

"Not only will this expenditure create jobs by creating necessary infrastructure, it will also allow public entities to benefit from fiber optics at a minimal cost," said Skagit County Commissioner Don Munks. "These funds are vital for the development and maintenance of our infrastructure in Skagit County."

To date, $10,812,650 has been award to projects funded by Rural County Sales and Use Tax.
