SKAGIT RIVER CRESTS AT 36.2 FEET AT MOUNT VERNON

EVACUATED RESIDENTS ASKED TO WAIT SIX HOURS BEFORE RETURNING HOME

According to the National Weather Service, the Skagit River crested at Mount Vernon at 36.2 feet at 11:15 PM, October 21.

Burlington Fire Chief Mark Anderson requested that people who were evacuated in Burlington to wait 6 hours after the crest before returning to their homes. The Skagit County Sheriff's Department is also requesting that people wait six hours before returning home as a safety precaution.

The Skagit crested at 42.2 feet at Concrete at 6:45 AM yesterday and is slowly receding. At 1:00 AM today it was reading 32.67 feet. Flood stage at both Concrete and Mount Vernon is 28 feet.

The National Weather Service predicts that the Skagit River will drop below flood stage briefly by Wednesday afternoon then rise a few feet again before dropping below flood stage Saturday.

The US Army Corps of Engineers advises that the South Fork Bridge over the Skagit River will be closed from 7:00 PM this evening to 6:00 AM tomorrow morning. One lane will periodically be open for a short time. The purpose of the closure is to remove an extensive debris jam from the bridge.

County and other officials and work crews continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate actions as necessary. Additional news releases will be issued as new information warrants.
