SKAGIT COUNTY COMMISSIONER KEN DAHLSTEDT RE-APPOINTED TO NATIONAL AGRICULTURE AND RURAL AFFAIRS STEERING COMMITTEE

SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt has recently been re-appointed as a member of the National Association of Counties' (NACo) Agriculture and Rural Affairs Steering Committee by NACo President Kenneth A. Mayfield.

The Agriculture and Rural Affairs Steering Committee focuses on farm legislation affecting the economy of agricultural counties; trade legislation as it affects agriculture; rural development programs; soil conservation; and agricultural land preservation.

"As a fourth-generation Skagit Valley farmer, this committee assignment is a good fit for me. It is important for us to be at the table at the local, state, and national level on agricultural issues," said Dahlstedt. "Putting U.S. agriculture on a level playing field with foreign producers is critical to save Skagit County agriculture."

During Dahlstedt's tenure on the committee, he has promoted national food safety legislation to require inspection of all foreign produced food products before entering our borders. "We need to insure a safe food supply for Americans," he said.

The committee's recommendations on legislative policies and goals are presented to NACo's membership during the association's Annual Conference. If approved, they become part of the American County Platform, which is the basis of NACo's efforts in representing counties before Congress and the White House.

Dahlstedt also serves on the Board of Directors of Pro Fac Cooperative, a major supplier of fruit and vegetable products for Agri Link Foods whose major label is Birdseye.
