EMERSON AND SEDRO-WOOLLEY HIGH SCHOOL SANDBAGGING TEAMS TIE FOR FIRST IN ANNUAL "FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK" TRAINING SESSION

137 students from Burlington-Edison, Emerson, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley participate

SKAGIT COUNTY - Last Friday, 137 students from Sedro-Woolley, Burlington-Edison, Emerson and Mount Vernon high schools were trained in sandbagging techniques as part of Skagit Flood Awareness Week. The event took place at Dike District 12 headquarters in Burlington and was co-hosted by Dike District 12 and Skagit County Surface Water Management.

Student volunteer help has been critical in past flood fights in Skagit County. The training involved instruction on sandbag filling and placement by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Training also involved a levee-building exercise where students divided into groups. The groups were graded on speed, accurate placement of sandbags, and overall levee stability.

Emerson and Sedro-Woolley high schools tied for first place. "This levee building exercise is used as a fun way to educate and train students that make up a large portion of the sandbagging force during flood events," said Delores McLeod, Administrative Assistant with Skagit County Public Works.

McLeod thanked the Army Corps of Engineers, Dike District 12 volunteers and Commissioners Chuck Bennett and Dan Lefeber, and the staff of Skagit County Public Works. She also thanked area businesses who donated refreshments and prizes. They were Burlington Thrifty Foods, Burlington Food Pavilion, Dike District #12, Dominos Pizza in Sedro-Woolley and Mount Vernon, McDonald's, Outback Steakhouse, Riverside Distributing, Wal-Mart and Walton Beverage.
