October 29, 2003 Contacts: "SURROUND THE SOUND" HALLOWEEN EMPHASIS PATROL
People who are out celebrating the weekend of Halloween can expect officers to pay particular attention to drinking drivers. They will also be looking for drivers who exceed the speed limit or commit other traffic violations. Officers conducting the emphasis are also urging drivers to be particularly careful on the evening of Halloween when many small children are out trick-or-treating. Last year's activity resulted in 151 people being charged with Driving Under the Influence. Five of those arrests were made in Skagit County. Agencies participating in this activity include the Washington State Patrol, Skagit County Sheriff's Office and local Police Departments. "Surround
the Sound" emphasis patrols will be conducted in Whatcom, Skagit,
Snohomish, King, Pierce, Thurston, Mason, Kitsap, Jefferson and Clallam
counties. This activity is coordinated by the Community DUI/Traffic
Safety Task Forces and is supported by the Washington Traffic Safety
Commission.
