SKAGIT COUNTY MARINE RESOURCE COMMITTEE TO REMOVE CREOSOTE LOGS
SKAGIT COUNTY The Skagit County Marine Resources Committee will remove creosote logs and treated timbers laying on local beaches from November 3-4, 2004. Removal efforts will concentrate on Guemes Island, Fidalgo Bay and in the Swinomish Channel.
Creosote, a wood preservative, is a mixture of toxic and carcinogenic compounds that continually leach into Puget Sound waters and food chains. Creosote compounds can be passed up the food chain where they can become concentrated in tissues of larger mammals, birds and humans who eat marine fish and shellfish.
Partners on the project are Northwest Straits Commission, Washington Department of Natural Resources, Port of Anacortes, Samish and Swinomish Tribes, Shannon Point Marine Center and community volunteers. Anyone interested in viewing this removal project, can contact Paul Dinnel at 360-293-2188, mornings, or at 360-299-8468, afternoons or evenings. He can be contacted by e-mail at padinnel@aol.com
