SHORT DISRUPTION OF SERVICE ANTICIPATED ON GUEMES FERRY DUE TO COAST GUARD REGULATIONS AND RELATED PERSONNEL ISSUES

SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County Public Works officials are anticipating a possible short disruption of service on the Guemes Ferry beginning November 4, 2002. Skagit County Public Works may be required to cancel the 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM sailings due to new Coast Guard regulations limiting how long ferry employees can work, and the related personnel scheduling changes to meet this requirement.

"We're in the process of negotiating a solution with crewmembers to meet this requirement," said Steve Cox, Guemes Ferry Manager. "We are also interviewing additional part-time crewmembers allowing us to maintain our level of service."

New crewmembers are required to participate in at least 40 hours of training. "If we are put in a position where we have to rely on new crewmembers, we may need to shorten the schedule until training is complete," said Cox.

"We appreciate your patience as we work through this. Our goal is to provide reliable and safe passage for all of our customers, while meeting all Coast Guard regulations for our crewmembers," said Cox.
