Counties Meet To Share Insights On Fighting Meth Abuse
SKAGIT COUNTY Skagit County Commissioner Don Munks participated in a Methamphetamine Prevention Forum in Ada County, Idaho on October 22 to share information with other elected county officials from the Northwest Region of the country.
The forum, sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the Idaho Association of Counties, was the second in a series which are designed to educate county elected officials and their community treatment and prevention partners on effective strategies to reduce meth use. County officials from Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota participated.
Fighting meth abuse is an incredibly important battle in Skagit County, said Munks. Joining with others to share ideas on how to prevent the devastating impact on families and communities is critical.
Since 2005, NACo has been at the forefront of raising national awareness on the effects of meth abuse on families and communities trough a series of national surveys. The surveys show that meth is the top drug threat facing county sheriffs departments; that more women, teens and minorities are abusing meth/ that meth abuse is a leading cause of child out-of-home placements; that meth is the top drug bringing people to county emergency rooms; and that the need for meth treatment is rising. The surveys are available at www.naco.org
