November 6, 2002 Games, music, prizes offered in first ever event for teens with diabetes SKAGIT COUNTY - Skagit County Youth and Family Services and Mount Vernon High School are sponsoring the "Teen Diabetic Event" at Mount Vernon High School Field House, on Tuesday, November 12, 2002, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. "It's an opportunity for teens with diabetes from around Skagit County to come together and share how they deal with diabetes," said Johnna Stewart, an Intervention Specialist with Youth and Family Services. "We'll have games, music, food, and prizes and hope to have a great turnout." Representatives from the American Diabetes Association and various organizations will be on hand to share information. "This is an opportunity for teens to decide if they want to get together on a regular basis. We would like to plan these events on a regular basis," said Stewart. According to the American Diabetes Association, 17 million people in the United States, or 6.2% of the population, have diabetes. While an estimated 11.1 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, another 5.9 million people are unaware that they have the disease. For further information,
