HISTORICAL NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ON SKAGIT RIVER FLOODS NOW AVAILABLE ON COUNTY WEBSITE

SKAGIT COUNTY – An archive of historical newspaper articles dated from 1909 to 1969 is available online at www.skagitcounty.net as part of Skagit County’s flood awareness efforts. More than 250 articles are linked to an index with summary and comments.

The archive was created by Larry Kunzler, Josef Kunzler and Skagit County Communications Director Dan Berentson. “We put in a significant amount of weekend hours to glean this information from old newspaper archives,” said Berentson. “This information is invaluable in the process of finding viable solutions for flood prevention.”

The articles chronicle the building of dams on the Skagit River, major floods, and community action to find solutions to flood damage. Additional archives will be compiled from the records of the Skagit Valley Herald, Courier Times and the Concrete Herald.

“To say this project has been anything but a labor of love for us would be a tremendous understatement,” said Larry Kunzler. “Preserving the local newspapers’ account of the flood issue is not only a value to those of us who are dedicated in resolving the issue, but also a value to the community as a whole.”

The archive is also available in book form at the Anacortes, Burlington, Concrete, La Conner, Mount Vernon, and Sedro-Woolley city libraries and at the Skagit County Public Works Department.
